Standards vs Compassion: Jack and Diane Chapter 32

Diane sat back in her chair, frustrated.

“We’ve been pushing hard on results, Jack. But I can feel morale slipping. I don’t want to be the leader who burns people out, I don’t want to be a jerk, and I definitely don’t want to run afoul of California labor laws.”

Jack leaned in.

“What if I told you it’s not the high standards that are wearing them down—it’s the way they’re delivered?”

Diane raised an eyebrow.

“Go on.”

“Think about it,” Jack said. “When you expect a lot and ignore the human side, people feel used. When you care but lower the bar, people feel dismissed, that you don’t have confidence in them. But when you care enough to set the bar high and walk beside them as they reach it—that’s when potential is unlocked. That’s when people rise.”

Diane paused.

“So it’s not about choosing between compassion and standards. It’s about combining them.”

“Exactly,” Jack nodded. “Your team doesn’t need less expectation. They need to know you believe in them enough to expect more—and that you’ll support them along the way.”

Diane smiled. “That changes everything.”

Leadership lesson: High standards paired with compassion don’t break teams—they build them.
