Diane frowned as she closed her laptop.
Her team wasn’t responding. The strategy was clear, the deadlines were set, but the energy was flat. They weren’t getting it done.
“They’ll do it,” she told herself. “I’m the CEO.” But still….nothing.
Later that afternoon, she called Jack.
“I don’t get it,” she admitted. “I’ve told them exactly what to do. They’re dragging their feet They won’t listen.”
Jack leaned back. “Sounds like you’re relying on your title.”
“Of course I am,” Diane said. “That’s why I have the title, that’s why I sign the checks!.”
Jack shook his head. “Titles can require compliance. But they can’t create commitment.”
Diane frowned. “So what’s missing?”
“Influence,” Jack replied. “People don’t follow positions anymore. They follow leaders who make them believe in something bigger than the task.”
Diane thought for a moment. “So instead of telling them what to do…”
“You show them why it matters,” Jack finished. “You build trust. You connect. That’s what gets people leaning in.”
Diane sighed. “So the question isn’t whether I’m the CEO. It’s whether I’m the kind of leader they’d choose to follow.”
Jack smiled. “Exactly.”
P.S. I work with business owners and leaders who want to move from titles to true leadership. If that’s you, schedule a conversation with me here
