Who is Dr. Garrett Goggans?
Garrett Goggans’ story began when he was 16 years old when he ran away from home. He was on the road to becoming another statistic and what he didn’t realize at the time was that had an underlying desire to achieve big things, he just didn’t know how to go about doing that. Little successes came his way and he had the chance to go back to school. He wanted to prove to himself that he could go all the way and decided to pursue a doctorate degree.
Over the course of Garrett’s education, he heard a speaker say “Any success that happens in your life is not due to your external circumstances and has everything to do with you.” This put Garrett on the path of personal development to find the truth.
As you go through the process of personal development, you begin to discover the kind of person that you want to be and how to become that person. Once he started applying the mindset tactics that he was learning, Garrett’s life began to change.
This learning journey turned into a book, and from there it became a mindset coaching business and a successful podcast as well.
The Mindset Principles of Success
The first principle is that thoughts become things. The mind is separated into two different sections, the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. Once you understand how they work with each you can understand how they affect your actions and your results in life.
The conscious mind is where our thoughts reside, and the subconscious mind is where our emotions and habits originate from.
Most people focus on their current state in life, and by focusing on things as they are and how they would like them to change, they are sending those negative thoughts to their subconscious mind. This creates negative emotions and leads to a negative feedback cycle.
The second principle is action. You have to consciously make the decision to eliminate other options and commit to a particular action. If we don’t take that decision seriously, we will constantly fall back into our existing habits.
The third principle is attitude. The attitude of gratitude is a powerful perspective to have. You can’t attain anything new in life unless you are grateful for what you already have. Gratitude elevates you and helps you think positive thoughts.
When working with clients, one of the first things he does is help them calm the mind because that enables them to reduce the noise and actually hear the thoughts they are having.
Most people understand the idea of mindset, but they don’t commit to putting it into practice. When we say we are going to try something, we leave the door open to failure. Trying is not deciding. What we say and how we say it really matters since the subconscious mind is programmed by our words.
Throughout the day, listen to what you say to yourself internally and externally. So much of your self image and what you do in life is defined by how you speak.
The Mindset Endgame
The process starts off by establishing goals. Most people are pursuing goals that other people think they should pursue. Whatever goal you are going for, you have to want to achieve. Otherwise you are setting yourself up for failure.
Once the rights goals are identified and someone starts implementing changes to their habitual thoughts and self talk, you’ll start to notice that successes start to happen more frequently. Those small successes start to gain momentum and that helps you start thinking about the bigger picture. You start to recognize that the people and resources you needed were always there.
Your mind is not your brain, it encompasses everything you are. If you don’t like who you are, make the decision to change your mind.
Getting Past a Victim Mindset
Things do happen to us and there are external circumstances that we can’t control. What we can control is how we respond to them. Most of us habitually react because we are in survival mode by default, but we can learn to choose different responses. This is the core of the mindset work.
The power of choice is a superpower. We can choose, we just don’t practice making choices. Mental mindset is the same as exercising the body. The more you train your mind, the easier it is to make choices and replace habits with better ones that serve you.
The first step to getting better results is to decide that you want them. Get a coach that will help you be accountable and find the one that speaks to you on an emotional level.
